Spotted in an Nvidia leak all the way back in 2019, it seems Square Enix really is preparing a remake of PS1 classic Final Fantasy IX. Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb backed the claim after receiving reassurance the project is still happening as of last month, but over the weekend, it appears the report has taken on a life of its own. Some outlets have expanded on the rumour to state the remake will be using an "ATB turn-based system". The issue is that Grubb never even said this.
With a tweet, he clarifies: "I haven't talked about FF9 in weeks, but these rumors keep bouncing back and forth between blogs and Twitter and YouTube as if I've said something new or different. I just said it's definitely real, which of course it is."
Along with a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, it still seems like Square Enix has a number of games it plans to bring back alongside the large-scale Final Fantasy VII Remake project. In fact, in a recent shareholders meeting, it was stated Square Enix is "considering various ideas within the company" when it comes to more remasters and remakes.
The Nvidia leak also shared word of Kingdom Hearts 4, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter 6, Dragon's Dogma 2, Tekken 8, The Talos Principle 2, and Helldivers 2. None of these games had been announced at the time, but have gone on to become very real projects. When do you think we'll get to see this Final Fantasy IX remake project? Post a prediction in the comments below.

I’m sure it’s real. SE, just like Capcom have realized how well received these complete remakes has been. Would be silly of them not to continue.
Can't wait for Square Enix to confirm that the Final Fantasy 9 Remake is legit, it'll probably be revealed later this year, as I have a feeling Sony plans to have another Showcase toward yeat's end AFTER the release of Spider-Man 2, because aside from Third-Party Exclusives; Rise of the Ronin & FF7 Rebirth, we really don't know what to expect in 2024 from a First-Party perspective, other than Factions maybe.
I think it's real but has probably been in development hell for a while whilst they decide on the final art style or combat style. I honestly wouldn't mind if it had the same art style as the bravely default games but I'm sure they will want it to feel and look high budget otherwise it won't sell.
I think its real and will be announced to release alongside the animated cartoon coming to netflix - possibly 2024-2025?
I dont see it being a significant departure in the way 7 Remake was so i reckon it will retain many of the classic elements but with a new art style, possibly to emulate the design of the anime.
I also heard FFX might be getting a remaster to align with its 25th anniversary in 2026, but surely its too ambitious for square to make on top of the continuation of the 7R trilogy, FF9, and kingdom hearts 4
Would definitely play and ATB combat sounds perfect for a mid budget release, just improving on how it was!
FFX already has the “scale” of a proper 3D game so it would not become as gigantic as VII. They would need to spice up that combat and eliminate random encounters though!
@Rob_230 30th anniversary would make more sense imo.
Hopefully without Tetsuya Nomura's participation.
I seem to recall that Jeff Grubb has somewhat less than reliable or trustworthy with this kind of thing in the past. Am I right? Is he really a good source?
I think it's real because of that Nvidia thing Push Square reported on back in 2021. That list has been so accurate that it even got Rift Apart correct.
I just hope it stays turn based.
I believe it's real, given the track record of the NVidia leak.
My only hope is that they don't touch the narrative. IX is not only my favorite game in the series, I'd argue it's the best one in the series. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I also don't trust modern day Square Enix to do right by the original vision of Sakaguchi.
One place it could use improvement (aside from a nice visual upgrade), is the speed at which combat flows, which in the original was glacially slow. Oh and it goes without saying: don't change the combat system, either. Rebalance it, sure; game was super easy. But keep it the traditional ATB.
SE is going to remake all of it's games. Why are people hoping this is real? Of course they are that is what they do.
Although I am a huge fan of FFIX I would prefer they first finish FFVII and then VIII before starting with IX.
sign me up for the preorder, my fave ff
Completely off topic but is interesting there are Xbox Gamepass run on this site.
All they need to do is make it like the Memoria Project. It's perfect and I doubt anyone would complain. I fully don't get why they don't hire peoppe who make things like this.
Please don’t be an action RPG
Why would SE have anything to say about a FF9 remake when they've just launched FF16 and are between 6 and 9 months from the next FF7 Remake game?
I don't understand why fans want everything all at once. I'm sorry, but it's stupid. None of us have the time to play these games in such quick succession anyway.
Honestly, worse than all the Zelda fans wanting Wind Waker and Twiloght Princess last year when TotK was imminent. Even now, we've literally just had TotK and SS not so long ago. And we've literally just had FF16 and there's FF7 remake imminent!
My vote is for absolutely nothing about FF9 or WW/TP for at least a year please. They'll be perfect to slot into the CHASM of time that will exist before we see Final Fantasy 17 and the next major 3D Zelda game!
FF17 is a good 6 years away you'd think. FF7 remake part 3... a good 4 or 5 years I reckon. Who wants FF9 now, instead of somewhere in that long wait? Crazy!
@nocdaes
Maybe those of us who don't care to play XVI or VII Rebirth?
Just saying.
Not everything Square puts out is something every fan wants to play. It's on Square to keep a steady release schedule.
@JustPlainLoco Wolverine possibly, Lost soul aside. Silent hill 2 remake if it’s not out next year, Kotor remake hopefully. Then there’s also all the multi platform games too with haptic feedback for dual sense
As much as I love IX it doesn’t need a remake as much as V or VI do as they are older games and people only have the pixel remasters for new versions. IX has the re release remaster version which looks great. Would still love a remake of IX though same as VIII and tactics
@rawzeku Yet Capcom won’t remake Dino crisis, RE Code Veronica and the RE outbreak games. They seem more bothered about milking RE4 to death
@Dragoon1994 - Oh yeah I forgot Lost Soul Aside was a definite 2024 release, as for Wolverine? Nah I think it's a 2025 release, and I think the Silent Hill 2 Remake is releasing this year, especially considering Bloober Team has stated a few times already that the game is nearing completion and are just waiting for Konami to greenlight a release date, however the KOTOR Remake looks like it might end up being a late 2025 or early 2026 release due to progress on the KOTOR Remake being scrapped and restarted under a new studio.
Just to clarify; when I said we don't know what's coming in 2024, I was specifically referring to PlayStation First-Party Studios, right now we only know of 4 games, and only one of them is likely to release in 2024, but we don't know what Team Asobi, Bluepoint, Nixxes, London Studio, Sucker Punch (Likely Ghost of Tsushima 2), Firesprite, Media Molecule, Santa Monica Studio, XDev, Malaysia Studio and a few other studios are working on.
@JustPlainLoco True. That’s if Kotor doesn’t end up getting cancelled which would be sad as that’s one of the games I bought my PS5 for. Wolverine may be late 2024 but I bought it most likely be a 2025 game. I just hope Rise of the ronin doesn’t release in the early window as that’s when we get Persona 3 remake and VII remake rebirth and I’ll be busy with both of those. I think Lost soul aide is an early next year too so there’s that too. Hope Ronin is a q2 game not q1. Maybe death stranding 2 next year if Kojima announces anything else for it. I forgot that we was getting another ghost of Tsushima game
@Pat_trick I hope Nomira will be involved, one of Squares best developers.
@Dragoon1994 I bought my PS3 because of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Because if it never arriving I decided to wait for the game that makes me want to buy a system to arrive first.
@DragonBl Yeah that’s understandable. I didn’t want a ps5 at first till they announced the Kotor remake, spider man 2, Wolverine, FFXVI, FFVII remake rebirth and rise of the ronin. Already have Spider man on pre order. Have FFXVI as well as a bunch of others already
@Dragoon1994 There are quite some games that I'm interested in that are already out. Demon's Souls Remake and Returnal look great and I'm interested in Stellar Blade.
@DragonBl Returnal is great I’ve only played a few hours of it so far but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played. The haptic feedback some of the games have is incredible
@Dragoon1994 Yeah, I heard good things about the game might be the first game I play on PS5
